...if I build my own WHS (with video), can it also be used as a limited computer?

I have an extra monitor, and I could see a need to use a web browser on this machine from time to time.

     Thanks, Stan

Not generally recommended but definitely works, yes.

Windows 7 (x64) Media Center: Core i5 650, 4GB DDR3, 2x Pinnacle 7010ix (2x DVB-S, 2x DVB-T), 2x 2.5" WD 250GB RAID-1, 3x 2TB Samsung 3.5", 2x 1.5TB Samsung 3.5" (all hidden in rack cabinet in garage)* Extender 1: X-box 360 Slim 4GB, 46" Sharp 1080p LCD TV, Logitech Z-5500 Speakers Extender 2: Linksys DMA-2100, cheap 26" LCD! * Replacing old WHS since Microsoft removed Drive Extender and did not include Media Center. SyncToy used to duplicate certain folders and planning to use Acronis True Image for PC backups.

asm495's correct; it will work, but in a limited fashion.

Just keep in mind that a lot of things in a WHS's control panel can break it from correctly functioning as a WHS.  Also, a lot of the function in IE are locked down in the security settings (preventing downloads etc).  These can be easily changed, or you could just download FireFox...

    Stan,

There is no such thing as a stupid question - just a stupid answer. If you have a genuine question, please pose it in the subject field. That way you are much more likely to get an useful response and more people will benefit.

Have fun with WHS. It is reat at what it does.

     Cheers

    Ben
