I have looked thru the forum and cannot seem to find an answer. I have been trying to get my Vista based laptop computer to work with my WHS. (Generic WHS, with PP3) on my own home-brew server. I can connect to the WHS via my Vista computer and get the Console. I can even remote into the WHS over the LAN.When I try to install the Windows Media Center Connector on my Vista laptop, the program runs and asks me the server password. I enter and click Next and the program just hands right there and never proceeds and is locked up. I have to kill the process to exit. Am I missing something? Any ideas of the problem? In my "Windows Media Center" tab of "Settings" in WHS, there is no "Allow Access" or no "Don't Allow Access" actions. I don't understand why Windows Media Center Connector cannot connect to the WHS?
Try using the connecter CD that came with WHS, itasks you two questions during the process, just say "no" to both. The connector software will have to be updated thereafter which should be pretty automatic. This is assuming that you're trying to install the current PP3 version of the connecter software copied from the WHS software folder locally.
Note: This worked for me with PP2, I haven't had the need since so me experience didn't exactly mirror yours but it's worth a try.
After giving it a little more thought, have you tried making sure to dump any residue of WHS connector before attempting to reinstall? e.g. folder in 'program files' and registry entries in HKLM and/or HKCU.
Hi mcewinter. I
don't understand. I am talking about the Windows Media Center Connector not the Windows connector which gives you the consol. Is the Windows Media Center Connector on the WHS disk? If so, do you know where it is located and the filename?I thought theWindows Media Center Connector was only on computers with Media Center installed.
You might try putting an entry in your hosts file so the connector can resolve the server name to the correct IP address.
Thanks RealCodeGuy, I will give it a shot.
Well, I have installed Win 7 on a new computer. When I try to install the Media Center Connector from that computer, the program askd for the WHS password then locks up. No connection. My Vista laptop does the same. On Both the Vista laptop and the Win 7 computer, I can access the WHS via a direct IP into it and also via the Console. The Media Center Connect just won't connect. Something is not open on WHS for this connector. The firewall is down so no problem there.
Does the Media Center Connector go thru a different port then the Console connector. Maybe my router is blocking the port? This is very frustrating.
By the way, I can't see to get PP3 as an available update on the WHS. Is there a trick here?
Thanks
You may want to try loading the NIC driver when you attempt to install the conector, that would be the only thing hanging you up at that point unless something is just horribly wrong.
Edit: Forget what I just said, that would be for restoring your PC, are you usung the connector software from your WHS software folder or are you usung the disc that came with WHS.
In your original post you state that you have PP3, now you say you don't, do you have the PP3 beta installed?
Hi mcewinter.
I have WHS with PP2 installed. I thought PP3 was released but I don't see it anywhere. Maybe I am wrong. I don't have the PP3 beta installed. I am running a client with Win 7 Ultimate with all updates. I ran the connector software that I downloaded from the WHS using (server name):55000 and I can run the console from that Win 7 client. The WHS also shows up in the shares on that client.
What does not work is the Windows Media Center connector. That appears in the "All Programs" list on that client. When I execute it, it asks for the WHS password and just crashes after that entry. Same thing happens when I do that from a Vista Laptop also on the same network.
Thanks for any help you can find.
I had this problem after I installed the disk management plug-in. I simply uninstalled it to bypass the issue.
It may be plug-in gone wacky. Disk management used to work for me, I can't remember what botched it up.
Since you ask I'll assume you don't have that plugin.
My point was a plug-in caused my issue, just trying to give you some ideas.
I would uninstall the connector software including registry entries and any residual folders; reboot; copy the connector software from WHS to Desktop; Run setup locally.
As far as PP3 is concerned; how are you accessing Windows updates, via the console or remote desktop?
You may want to search around here...

It would be worth your while to sign up if you need to post anything, it's actually a rather efficient forum.
I Turned on updates by logging into the WHS via an attached terminal and using the control panel. When I tell it to search for updates, it does not find PP3.
Is your WHS set to receive updates automatically? I apologize for asking but is it possible PP3 is already installed? It won't show up until after WHS has been restarted, once again I'm sorry to ask simple questions, I don't mean to insult your intelligence.
No Problem. Good questions to ask. I once worked with a client who stated she could not get the computer to turn on and display. After 10 minutes I relized she had not turned the terminal on. So I understand.
Went into the Server via a connected terminal and looked in the Control Panel under system and it shows PP2 as installed ( even after rebooting). Also set to receive updates automatically. That confounds me.
