Hi. I'm running WHS with PP3, but I'm having a few issues. Maybe someone can help?
Thanks all...
Jon
Are you running on a gigabit network?
My recorded TV shows the thumbnails, but sometimes they take a couple seconds to pop up. I found that for whatever reason, the thumbnails take a bit longer in WMC when the item is stored on my WHS. They seem slower to pop up on an extender than another PC with gigabit.
I have my items integrated with my WHS as a location, so I don't need to go to shared. Just to be clear, you are saying you have to go to SHARED tab in recorded TV? If yes, you can add the WHS to your library and then it shows up in the normal options. If not, would you walk me through what you mean?
Hi, thanks for responding. Yes, I am running a gigabit network (though only via cat5, so it's more like 1/2gigabit in reality). I have extenders and I do see how the thumbnails show up over time. But this is very different... they simply don't show up... ever. It's as if the way Media Center pics up cover art is not enabled on my WHS or something.
So, what I'm actually trying to do is use the "shared pivot" as an archive /2nd database of sorts. So, imagine this:
My Media Center stores my primary content... tv shows, music, etc. This is the "real" stuff that has mainstream usage. My WHS is being used as an "alternative" music library (random stuff I wouldn't necessarily want in my primary library for various reasons), and WHS is being used as an "archive" of TV shows that I'll want to watch at a much later date and would not want jamming up my already busy Recorded TV menu (kind of creating an ad-hoc "category" field that is so missing from WMC's recorded TV view).
These reasons are why I don't have my WHS folders literally added to my Media Center libraries. Make sense?
Got it.
I can test this:
Remove WHS from my library and see what happens in the shared option - I'll let you know in a few.
Removed my WHS from the library for Recorded TV and Music.
The thumbnails actually came up faster when I clicked on Shared, then picked my WHS, than they came up when they were intertwined with the library of two other PCs.
Music appears the same.
Also, I don't see a user1 or other user under my shared tab. I see Recorded tv, my WHS, my main HTPC, my secondary HTPCs (three of them).
Just to double check, your WHS is not named user1?
Also, checking permissions
From WHS console: SETTINGS > WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER
All folders that are media related (recorded TV, music, photos, videos) are full access
And I have a home built WHS with a 3ghz dual core (not sure if the processor speed helps me).

When you say "my WHS" -- what precisely does it say? Mine says "User 1 (homeserver)" amongst other options like TwonkyMedia (homeserver) as well as jon (office)... and other user (pc) variations. So, I think "User 1" is actually what's being displayed for the user on WHS called "jon" because clicking on User 1 sends me to the music library under \\homeserver\users\jon (but with no thumbnails).
Thanks for looking into this... it's good to know that it should work. Now the question is... what the heck do I have setup wrong??
Mine says the name of my WHS - in my case: SanFrancisco
Mine says the names of my HTPCs - in my case: Tiburon, Belvedere, Hillsborough, Sausalito, Tamalpais, etc...
The last listing is ALL COMPUTERS.
I don't use TwonkyMedia. I run Windows 7 on all PCs in the house and have several Linksys DMA2100s too.

This was good advice... so good that I thought it was going to solve my problems. I looked at that screen and saw that I gave WMC no permissions to "jon" on home server. So I changed that to "all' access, and it asked me to reboot WMC. So, I did. But, surprisingly, nothing has changed at all. Still no thumbnails anywhere, and still "user 1" in the shared pivot!
Weird... what else could I have setup wrong?

OK, in "recorded TV" here's what I get:
----------------
recorded tv
homeserver
lenny
theoffice
all computers
---------------
They are all the PCs that are on in my LAN.
But when I go to the Music/Shared pivot, I get a different set of options:
Music Library
Brenda (theoffice)
jon (theoffice)
jon (couchtop)
Twonkymedia (HomeServer)
PlayOn (TheOffice)
User 1 (homeserver)
---------------------------
What do you see in Music/Shared?
[my name] (Montecito)
[my wife's name] (Cate Mesa)
did it again and now KODAK: Montecito shows up - ties into one of our photo frames.
Photo frames? Not sure what that means (?)
So, what's your home server's name again?
Do you have your login for your WMC box being the same as that of your WHS? Same password? (I don't, and I'd rather not)
walkabtMusic Library [my name] (Montecito) [my wife's name] (Cate Mesa) did it again and now KODAK: Montecito shows up - ties into one of our photo frames.
My logins are blank for my HTPC's client profiles. I have an admin profile for each PC as well, but they don't log in using that to watch video on any PC.
My server name is SF, above.
I have Kodak wifi connected photo frames that share music, videos and photos with one of my computers - http://store.kodak.com/store/ekconsus/en_US/pd/W820_Wireless_Digital_Frame_with_Home_D%C3%A9cor_Kit/baseProductID.145109800/productID.145109900
So... your home server isn't even showing up in the shared pivot for music?
