    Hard drive Zunes

        * It's called the Zune 80 and, shockingly enough, it has 80GB of storage.
        * Uses the new Zune Pad -- four way touch-sensitive d-pad (with up, down, left, and right buttons).
        * It will sell for $250 (with "premium" headphones).
        * Available only in black (to start).
        * Screen size has increased to 3.2-inches (from 3-inches). As far as we know the resolution is still QVGA.
        * Dimensions are 61.1 x 108.2 x 12.9mm (2.4 x 4.25 x 0.5-inches), some 1/3rd smaller than the classic Zune.
        * The classic Zune will now be known as the Zune 30 -- it's not going anywhere. More on that in a sec.

    New flash Zunes

        * Zune 8 and Zune 4 are the names for the 8 and 4GB flash based models.
        * Also uses the Zune Pad.
        * These will sell for $200 and $150 respectively.
        * Both will be available in pink, green, black, and red.
        * It will feature a 1.8-inch screen (compare to the nano's 2-inch screen).
        * Dimensions are 41.4 x 91.5 x 8.5mm (1.6 x 3.6 x 0.33-inches) -- compare to the new iPod nano, at 69.8 x 52.3 x 6.5mm (2.75 x 2.0 x 0.26-inches).

    Everything else

        * New Zunes ship in November, date not yet announced.
        * All Zunes (including the Zune 30) will have a new, redesigned interface and feature parity. In other words, early Zune 30 adopters will have all the same software features as new Zune 80, 8, and 4 users.
        * Additional native video codecs for h.264 and MPEG-4 -- users no longer need transcode those file types to WMV.
        * Zune can FINALLY sync video from your Media Center PC! Jeez, took you friggin long enough, guys!
        * WiFi sync to host computer! Includes moving over music, movies, photos, podcasts, etc.
        * Podcast support! (Sorry, no over the air downloads -- sync only.) Podcasts can also be shared via WiFi.
        * The 3x3 song sharing DRM has had its three day restriction removed, but users can still only play files three times.
        * There is still NO wireless music store.
        * The Zune software is all new and rewritten, and is supposed to actually be more than a rebadge of WMP10 now. Friggin finally.
        * The Zune music store is going DRM-free, with over 1m MP3 tracks being made available for download. Other details (like which labels, whether there is a DRM-free upgrade path is for users who've bought music with DRM, price differences, etc.) are not yet revealed.

a bit more info here... http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/02/microsofts-new-zunes-officially-in-80-8-and-4gb-sizes/

Looks like the rumors were true Media Center Support and wifi sync!!!!  :)  any Microsoft guys care to let us know how its going to work (IE is it going to transcode stuff like wmp or straight transfer content?).  Hopefully no transcoding will take place...  takes too long to transcode imo.

The Zune Software now supports importing to DVR-MS, which then should be transcoded to WMV.  Putting MPEG-2 on a portable is a bad idea, no matter how much you hate transcoding.

Nothing was said about syncing via a 10-foot UI, like PMCs had.

i figured thats what it was going to do... i just hate having to transcode things (and keep storage for them) because i have alot of shows (of which new ones are recorded constantly).  i usually keep the last weeks worth of shows on my sync list so thats alot of cpu cycles to transcode.

something else that i wonder is will it be able to transcode hd shows....  i record stuff in hd only if available so if it cant that would be a pretty big flaw for me.  (even if the zune isnt widescreen)

good to see MS is progressing the Zune. I wouldnt mind one, but as my iriver pmc is still functional, cant justify the expense.

It'd be interesting to see if  mce syncing was enabled.

re- dvrms conversion, is this enabled via WMP for the zune specifically now, or via a third party app...?? I wish they would ditch windows encoder in favour of something a bit speedier :p  But I guess it enables them to wangle in DRM features... :(

@Chris....I cant think of anyone sane that would deploy mpeg2 on a pmc... :)  !!  Native H264 is the way to go. MS must be paying attention !

Nope, VC-1/WMV.  Zune will never support transcoding to H.264.  No reason for it too.

Does this mean that those MS-DVR files will be just copied from Media Centre over to the zune and no (time consuming) converstion will be done ?

Also - If I just plug the zune into my PC via USB does it appear as a drive and can I then just copy stuff to and from it or is there anther load of bloatware to be installed that does all the syncing ?

Transcoding is still going to be needed.  Putting 2GB-8GB files on the device isn't going to work too well.

It would work fine for me.  I have maybe 10 GB of music, leaving 70 GB of space on the new model.  If I want to take that week's recording of The Office into work once a week, or take a few hours of movies with me on the road for a trip, a little juggling isn't going to hurt me.  I'd like it to be an option if it will avoid the conversion time.

And there might be, but I doubt it.  The other thing you have to think about is battery life.  Lower resolution WMV should be easier to decode then high resolution and high bitrate MPEG-2.  You could be talking about hours of difference in battery life.

Interface looks good, device looks nice.

I wouldnt mind transcoding, as long as it supports my DVRMS-HD recordings as some movies are 15GB each.

And it looks like I wont be getting my biggest wish:  Sideshow support.  In my eyes, this is the next best thing.  Why woudnt MS include it in their portable device?!

Let me use my Zune80 as a wireless controller for Windows Media Center and Im sold on day one.

I bet you are.  Smile [:)]  I was talking about transcoding DVR-MS files, which should be done by Zune software to WMV.  I didn't say the device couldn't support other formats.

by MPEG-4, does this mean the Zune 2.0 will support xvid / divx natively w/o transcoding, or does this mean the Zune software will just accept these video formats for transcoding?  If it means natively w/o transcoding, what do you think the chances are of it supporting xvid with AC3?

I'll be buying one of these 80GB bad boys as soon as they are released! I have about 20GB of music I think at the moment in Media Center.
I 'm gonna be on the road traveling for a year or so soon, so this is a must have device for me, as well as my Sony PSP, for those long bus and train journey's!

When will these new Zunes 2.0's be released here in the UK does anyone know?
If I bought a US Zune 2.0 from Amazon.com I shouldn't have any problems with the device?

How is this device priced compared to an IPOD? The new Zune is $249.00 about £120.00
I have never owned an IPOD and think Apple software is a nightmare. So more than happy to buy a non Apple mobile media player.
