All, I am building a dedicated 7MC after 4+ years of a Jack-of-all-trades PC which ran various incarnations of Media Center. I am planning on keeping all media on the older PC (converting to Home Server in near future).
In setting up the slideshows etc I noticed the date and titles of the photos are no longer correct. It seems they now pick up file name and date created (perhaps modified I didn't look that closely). If I copy the same files from the remote server to the local hard drive, all is good again. Why would this be?
I am sharing via Win7 libraries and have shared the picture library to the homegroup with Read permissions. I also tried an old fashioned share mount point (and avoided the win& library concept) but it did not help.
The XMP data is in a side file written by IMatch. From what I read, this is where Win7 gets its data. If I use File Explorer to viw the files on the remote server the data is correct also -- so this is something 7MC is doing (badly). Does 7MC somehow filter the files and only include actual picture files when it does remote files (and so miss the XMP files)?
Any ideas? This is really annoying as one of the reasons we went to dedicated is to get the new slideshows and now the data is broken.
Sigh.

I suspect that you are correct in assuming that 7MC is not picking up on the sidecar files on remote shares. I don't use sidecar files, but store the XMP metadata in the images themselves. 7MC is able to read the XMP from images held on my Home Server without problems.
