One example is I have 10 albums from the 70s with the hits. One for each year. Each year has various artist on it.

Problem is I go to browse for that album and its split artist. So there is probably 300 albums instead of 10.

 Each album has good tagging (by other standards at least) I tried removing the tag for album artist and that did not help.

 Would like to go play that album (CD) if possible and would like to cut down on all the albums as it makes it hard to browse.

Actually, the obvious was the fix.  Use a bulk tagging utility and make them various artist.

I had originally ripped these with Itunes to my iPOD and then brought them back to a PC with another utility.  The album artist was not consistant.
